Teams Setup
Overview
Compass works with Microsoft Teams, allowing your team to ask questions and get AI-powered data analysis directly in Teams channels, group chats, or personal chats.
Prerequisites
- A Microsoft Teams tenant with admin access (or access to someone who has it)
- A Compass organization (sign up (opens in a new tab) if you don't have one)
Installing the Compass App
Step 1: Download the app package
During onboarding, you'll be prompted to download the Compass Teams app package. You can also download it from the Admin UI at any time.
Step 2: Upload to Teams Admin Center
- Go to the Microsoft Teams Admin Center (opens in a new tab)
- Navigate to Teams apps > Manage apps
- Click Upload new app
- Select the Compass app package (.zip) you downloaded
- The app will appear in your organization's app catalog
Note: Uploading custom apps requires Teams admin permissions. If you don't have access, ask your Microsoft 365 admin to complete this step.
Step 3: Add Compass to a channel
Once the app is uploaded to your tenant:
- Open the Teams channel where you want to use Compass
- Click the + button to add an app, or go to Apps and search for "Compass"
- Add Compass to the channel
You can add Compass to:
- Channels — Best for team-wide data analysis. Everyone in the channel can see questions and answers.
- Group chats — Good for smaller group conversations with Compass.
- Personal chat — For individual use. Only you can see your questions and answers.
Step 4: Connect your organization
The first time someone messages Compass in Teams, it will show a Sign in card. Click it to link your Teams tenant to your Compass organization.
If your organization is already set up but the channel hasn't been configured, Compass will show a Configure Channel card that links to the Admin UI where you can assign data connections to the channel.
Managing Teams Channels
You can manage your Teams channels from the Admin UI:
- Assign data connections to specific Teams channels
- Configure which datasets are available in each channel
- View channel activity
