Compass analyzes your Dagster+ operational data (runs, assets, sensors, schedules, alerts, metadata) and provides clear answers with links to relevant runs/assets and suggested next steps.

How It Works

  1. Connect Dagster+ - Link your Dagster+ organization to Compass via OAuth
  2. Compass reads operational data - Runs, assets, sensors, schedules, alerts, metadata
  3. Ask questions in Slack - Get answers grounded in your Dagster+ operational state
  4. Get actionable insights - Links to relevant runs/assets, suggested next steps, pattern analysis

Proactive alerts: Compass can automatically surface emerging operational issues and summarize scope so teams can respond faster.

Team collaboration: Share Compass findings in Slack threads to reduce "bugging coworkers" for initial investigation. The entire team can see the context and collaborate on resolution.

Setup

Prerequisites

Connect Dagster+ to Compass

  1. Go to dagstercompass.com/login (opens in a new tab) or type !admin in your Compass Slack channel
  2. Navigate to Data Sources section
  3. Click Add Data Source → Dagster+
  4. Click Connect to Dagster+ to authorize via OAuth
  5. Select which Dagster+ organization to connect
  6. Choose which Slack channel(s) should have access to Dagster+ operational data

Once connected, Compass can answer questions about your Dagster+ pipelines and platform health in the configured channels.

What Gets Analyzed

Compass analyzes operational data from Dagster+:

  • Runs - Status, duration, logs, failure modes
  • Assets - Freshness, materialization history, dependencies
  • Sensors & Schedules - Execution patterns, failures, timing
  • Alerts - Alert history, frequency, patterns
  • Metadata - Run metadata, asset metadata, tags
  • Platform Health - Dagster+ system status and incidents

Compass does not access:

  • Code in your Dagster repositories
  • Data in your data warehouse (unless separately connected)
  • Secrets or credentials stored in Dagster+

Security & Privacy

  • OAuth authentication - Secure connection using Dagster+ OAuth
  • Read-only access - Compass only reads operational data, never modifies pipelines or data
  • Channel-based access - Control which Slack channels can query Dagster+ data
  • No training on your data - Your operational data is not used to train AI models

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I connect multiple Dagster+ organizations or deployments?

Coming soon. Currently, you can connect one Dagster+ organization. Per-deployment access within an organization is planned for future releases.

Does this work with Dagster OSS?

This integration is only available for Dagster+. Don't have Dagster+? Sign up at dagster.plus/signup (opens in a new tab).

What permissions does Compass need?

Compass requires read-only access to your Dagster+ operational data (runs, assets, alerts, metadata). The OAuth flow will show exactly what permissions are requested.

Can Compass modify pipelines, create tickets, or suggest code changes?

Compass can create tickets as part of the regular context management flow to improve its understanding of your data. However, it cannot modify pipeline definitions or suggest code changes yet. Agentic workflows for pipeline modifications are planned for future releases.

Is this available in the Dagster+ UI or other interfaces?

Not yet. This integration is currently Slack-only. Chat interfaces inside the Dagster+ UI and other surfaces (MS Teams) are planned for future releases.
